As 2021 is coming to a close, we can agree it was another challenging year for travel. Many borders remained off-limits to international visitors, and those that were open implemented confusing entry restrictions that could change by the day.
Luckily, with the vaccine rollout, travel is starting to show signs of a pulse. The industry is ready to make a rebound, and even more so are eager travelers after a drawn-out hiatus. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, domestic air travel is almost at pre-pandemic levels. International travel is also making its comeback and is expected to make a further recovery in 2022.
New terms like “revenge travel” are trending in the media and forecasted as a travel fad for the next few years. Whether you’re itching to cross off items on your bucket list or want to work from a hotel in a dream destination, this list is for you.
Below you’ll find a quick overview of each destination and their current COVID situation. It’s by no means a detailed guide for each one, but I’ve added a few suggestions or linked other helpful posts. Here’s a look at dream destinations you should consider visiting next year and beyond!
1. Cusco, Peru
High in the Peruvian Andes is the ancient city of Cusco. Once the capital of the Incan Empire, today, it is the perfect gateway for travelers heading to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Cusco weaves together traditional Incan history with modern Peruvian culture. Spending a couple of days here to explore the ancient ruins of the Incan Empire or taste your way through the town is a must. If you’ve been waiting to cross this destination off your list, 2022 is the time to do it!

It is a lively city full of nightlife but offers plenty of history in Old San Juan. If you prefer to travel through your taste buds, make sure you try the mofongo, pasteles, and tostones.
You can venture out of the city to the nearby El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest. Or you can visit some of Puerto Rico’s most beautiful beaches by taking a ferry to Vieques or Culebra islands.

Sure, this tiny island nation is not visible on a map, but boy, do you not want to miss it in person. A dream destination list, without the Maldives, would not be right. You’ve seen the images of overwater villas and the turquoise blue water, and I can confirm it’s even better in person. With hundreds of resorts to choose from and how exclusive each one is, this is the perfect destination to ease your way back into international travel after the pandemic. Many resorts offer great deals to incentivize visitors, so now is a great time to find the best value.

6. Moab, Utah
Full of natural wonders, Moab is a destination with the outdoor lover in mind. After a couple of visits, I can’t get enough of Utah. It has quickly become one of my favorite U.S. states to explore, thanks to its undeniable beauty. Moab is the pinnacle of red rock formations and home to Arches National Park. A wonderland for rock climbers, hikers, and photographers alike. Thanks to its low light pollution, Moab is a spectacular location for stargazing.

Another Mediterranean location for this list. Italy as a whole is a dream destination. While most tourists are flocking to popular cities like Rome, Florence and Positano, the cliffside town on the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia should not be missed.
