No trip to Italy is complete without a visit to Venice. Its world-famous canals and romantic gondola rides attract tourists from all over the world. Built on hundreds of tiny islands within a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, there’s truly no place like it.
While solo traveling in Italy, I did a day trip to the famed city. Hoping off of the train and exiting the station I found myself in front of the Grand Canal gazing at all the boats moving swiftly in the water. From there I followed a map to the main points of interest, such as the Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco, and Saint Mark’s Basilica.
Besides the popular sites, my favorite part about Venice was getting lost, exploring all the canals, and shops, and stopping for pizza. Though I can’t say Venice was my favorite city in Italy, it was definitely a wonderful experience and a day trip seemed like enough time to see the main points of interest.
Unfortunately, Venice is slowly sinking from the rising sea levels due to climate change. Many buildings have so much damage from flooding being such a common occurrence. Many are worried about how long the city can sustain under such conditions.
There’s no sure sign that the end of Venice will occur in our lifetime, but there is a strong possibility if things don’t change. So if you haven’t already, witness everything this magical city has to offer before it’s too late.
